National Disability Institute Presents Fourth Annual Financial Wellness Webinar Series for People Living with Multiple Sclerosis
Program provides free information and expert insight to address unique financial challenges faced by people living with MS.
Washington, D.C. – September 2, 2014 – On September 17, 2014, National Disability Institute will launch the fourth annual Financial Wellness
Webinar Series designed to help people living with multiple sclerosis (MS) plan for their financial futures. Expert guests with backgrounds in law, finance and public benefits will share their insight on topics including taxes, employment, social security and credit.
All resources and information presented in the series will be tailored to address the unique challenges faced by people living with MS who require careful planning and preparation in order to maintain financial stability. More than 1,500 people registered for the webinars in 2013, which are made available free of charge with support from Acorda Therapeutics (Nasdaq: ACOR).
In 2011, National Disability Institute conducted an online survey of 3,000 people living with MS, with 67 percent of respondents reporting that their financial positions declined after their MS diagnosis. In addition, 74 percent reported that they did not use financial planning programs or strategies to manage or stabilize their finances.
Survey findings led National Disability Institute to partner with Acorda Therapeutics to launch the Financial Wellness Webinar Series. A new report released by National Disability Institute in July 2014 on the financial capability of people with disabilities underscored those findings, with 78 percent of people with disabilities reporting they had difficulty making ends meet, as compared with 56 percent of people without disabilities.
“Learning financial fundamentals is one of the first and most important steps in building life-long financial wellness,” said Michael Morris, executive director of National Disability Institute.
“This free webinar series offers people living with MS a unique opportunity to learn more about their money and available options to help them make more informed choices about their financial futures. We are grateful Acorda Therapeutics has joined National Disability Institute to make this important program available to people living with MS and their families.”
The first webinar in the series will be held Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. ET and will last 90 minutes. Hosted by nationally renowned financial literacy advisor Marlene Ware, participants will learn basic steps that may lead to improved financial independence and security.
Subsequent webinars will be held on the third Wednesday of each month through January 2015, with the exception of December. Each webinar consists of a one-hour expert presentation followed by a half-hour set aside for questions from participants. In addition, guest speakers who live with MS will offer a peer perspective during each webinar. There is no cost to participate in the webinars, but registration is required.
