MS or Sjorgrens Disease

by Adrienne
(Portage, IN)

...waiting for a diagnosis

I am 38 years old and my symptoms started 3 months ago suddenly. Vision problems and severe pain behind my eye sent me to the ER. In the course of seeking a diagnosis, I have developed tremors in my left hand and head, confusion, imbalance, urinary problems and severe fatigue.

My MRI showed 2 lesions on my brain and my visual evoked potentional test showed demyelination on the left side (my vision is still affected in my left eye). My blood work showed an elevated level for Sjorgren's Disease so my neurologist is retesting.

Right now she says it looks, walks and talks like MS, but is holding off on a diagnosis until the blood test comes back again. Nothing like going in prepared to hear you have one thing and finding out there might be a whole different beast lurking inside of you!

Has anyone else dealt with Sjorgren's mimicing MS or riding it's coattails?

Information about Sjogren's
by: Susan Stone

Hi there,

I am always researching information on autoimmune diseases and happen to know of a website that might inform you about Sjogren's Disease and maybe help clarify some of your symptoms. The Sjogren's Syndrome Foundation has good information at www.sjogren.org.

Good luck:)

Thanks, Susan
by: Akrista

Hi Susan,

Thanks for the information about Sjogrens Disease. Seems we got the spelling wrong in the first post. It's the disease that Venus Williams has. I've found a few facts about the disease as well.

  1. 90% of women have this disease

  2. It is an autoimmune disease

  3. It affects glands and other tissues of the body

  4. Can cause inflammation of the glands that produce tears causing dry eyes

  5. Also inflammation of glands that produce saliva causing dry mouth and dry lips

  6. Can occur in families that also have other autoimmune diseases like lupus

Anyone wanting to find out more about it, should check out the website Susan provided.

MS
by: Sophia

Hello,
It seems as if you do indeed have Multiple Sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis can be diagnosed in anyone, more likely women (Caucasians of European descent), usually from the age of 20 to 50. Although, the youngest case was that of a 10 month old, and the oldest case was that of a 75 year old.

My mother was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in July of 2011. She also has Lupus, Arthritis, a problem with her glands, and many more things. I believe Sjorgrens Disease was one of the thought to be diseases before she was diagnosed.

The one thing I found a while back was that Multiple Sclerosis also has almost the exact same symptoms of Lindane poisoning. Lindane is found in Kwell lotion, used to treat scabies.

I have both
by: Anonymous

I have been diagnosed with both in August. My rheumatologist said that I have probably had Sjogrens since my mid 20's and as far as the MS I just know that I had 10 lesions in 2009 (which no one ever told me about), I was in a car accident and had a severe concussion that's why they did the MRI then. When I was hospitalized in July they did another one and found that I have 25 lesions now. Having an ANA, and testing specifically for Sjogrens A and B as well as RA specifically.
