by Connie Cox (Misner)
(Seattle, WA)
After the fall,
My body shut down
In a wheelchair, I was bound.
I asked myself and everyone around me – why?
All my family could do in response was cry.
------------------------------
When I was moved to a rehab center,
I found Daniel.
I was his ‘girly-girl;’ he was my ‘superman.’
We rode our wheelchairs together, holding hands.
When Daniel got sick, I told him, “Hold on one more day for me.”
When he closed his eyes for the last time, I was not there to see.
“Why couldn’t you wait,” I asked him, but he was not around to hear.
Gone was my happiness; gone was my dear.
--------------------------------
Since then, I steer my chair alone
No Daniel by my side
To face the steep ramps, the treacherous hills
To scare away my fears,
To calm my chills.
I’m trapped.
Lonely are the days without Daniel.
